Yankee Street Fair, August 23
This year’s Yankee Street Fair will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, a schedule that will take full advantage of the busiest time of previous fairs. Baked goods, snow cones, hamburgers, hotdogs, and kapusta will be sold throughout the day. Many traditional booths will be seen again at this year’s fair, including the popular bargain tent, silent auction, and children’s activities. New to our fairgrounds will be a Heywood Hospital health screening table, Westminster Police and Fire equipment demonstrations, Westminster’s 250th Anniversary memorabilia table, and Habitat for Humanity table. The change in time is partly due to the elimination of the evening chicken barbecue, a decision prompted by a decline in customers over the last few years. This year’s fair will feature a variety of live entertainment: Our very own Jeff Root will get things started; Beatles for Sale will rock the lunchtime crowd; and Mugawumps will jam in the afternoon. DJ Brian Butler will play intermittently throughout the day.
The silent auction is one of the fair’s big attractions and a key to the fair’s success because all auction items are donated. The Yankee Street Fair Planning Committee is looking for items for this year’s auction. You can help by getting us sporting event tickets, furniture, entertainment tickets, business gift certificates, trip packages, etc. to auction off. For more information, check with Debbie and Mike Sunderland.
To try to make the bargain tent even better this year, the YSF Planning Committee requests that all members of the congregation who donate gently used household items to price each one. This will help the volunteers who work the tent. Tagged items for the bargain tent can be brought to the church beginning Sunday, June 15. (Sorry, we cannot accept electronic equipment—computers, computer monitors, computer networking devices, televisions, cell phones, etc.—appliances, or large furniture.)
Volunteers are essential to running the fair smoothly each year. The YSF Planning Committee is building the foundation for an outstanding event in August, but now we need volunteers to sign up to work the booths, donate gently used household items for the bargain tent, supply baked goods, set up for the fair, and clean up after the fair ends. To volunteer, contact Gaylord Gray or Kim Caisse.
